World Parkinson’s Awareness Day

Today, on World Parkinson’s Awareness Day, we want to highlight the scientific work being carried out in Spain on this disease. One of the neurological diseases that is increasing in prevalence, mortality and disability and the second most common after Alzheimer’s disease. At Technaid we are very sensitive to this disease, to the point that our first product, the Tech-Filter, was a solution for access to computers for people with Parkinson and Essential Tremor. With this device, which was placed between a computer and the mouse, it was possible to reduce the transmission of tremor from the user’s hand to the cursor on the screen.

We have also recently closed the Extend project, in which we collaborated with prestigious institutions such as Imperial College in the United Kingdom, Pompeu Fabra University, Fraunhofer, Ossür and the SERMAS and SESCAM health services. Within this project, various techniques were developed for neurological activation using new technologies, and one of the fields addressed was tremor caused by diseases such as Parkinson’s or essential tremor.

In addition, we are currently participating in the AI4HealthyAging project and specifically in work package 5 dedicated to Parkinson’s disease. Within this package, together with Inntegra and Starlab. and under the coordination of CSIC, we apply our motion capture technology to discover the signals that allow us to diagnose this disease as early as possible. The global project, which addresses other diseases such as hypoacusis or sarcopenia, is coordinated by Capgemini Spain and involves institutions such as ITAINNOVA – Instituto Tecnológico de Aragón, Instituto Cajal CSIC (CSIC), Instituto Aragonés de Ciencias de la Salud (IACS) , Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria Aragón – IIS Aragón, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya CIT UPC, UPC BarcelonaTech Technology Center, Universitat de València, Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS), Spanish Red Cross, Fundación Andaluza para la Investigación y Gestión del Conocimiento en Otorrinolaringología (FAIGESCO), Bitbrain, Podoactiva,

Unfortunately, given that age is the main risk factor, an increase in prevalence is expected in the coming years. At present, treatment is almost exclusively applied to symptoms, but much research is being focused on treatments based on external stimulation. We are involved in some of these researches and we are very happy to contribute with our efforts to this cause.

We continue to keep working.
