Robotic Exoskeletons for Rehabilitation and Assistance of Patients with Neurological Damage Experiences and Possibilities in Latin America

Abstract

This book presents the robotic exoskeletons for rehabilitation and assistance of patients with existing or developing neurological damage in Latin America, making throughout the book a detailed description of them. Throughout the book, for each exoskeleton considered, we have dealt with, among other aspects, its mechanical structure, its action and control system, the man-machine interfaces used, and in some of them, the clinical experiences carried out with patients.

From this document, it can be concluded that, in the development of robotic exoskeletons for the rehabilitation and care of patients with neurological damage, although there are groups in Latin America that are making commendable efforts (notably groups from Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and Paraguay), with results comparable to world-class groups, the global and joint effort is scarce in this Latin American community.

Another conclusion derived from this book is that clinical experiences in which exoskeletons are used with patients with neurological damage are very scarce. It is especially important to concentrate efforts in this area, in order to verify the improvements that the use of these devices offers the patient compared to traditional therapies.
